WELCOME TO VERMONT
BIENVENUE AU VERMONT
Welcome to Vermont the Green Mountain state. Home of great scenery, the nation's largest (and best) producers of Maple Syrup, great skiing, dairy farms, teddy bears, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream and birthplace of US Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Chester A. Arthur.
Vermont ranks 45th in area at 9250 square miles and thus is not surprising that we are also 49th in population at 608,830 (only Wyoming is smaller). Vermont is the only New England state with no coastline along the Atlantic Ocean, but we make up for that with Lake Champlain that runs almost half of our western border with New York. This features gives us the nickname of the "west coast of New England". Vermont also has the Green Mountains (part of the Appalachian Mountain range) that runs the length of Vermont from the Quebec border to the north to Massachusetts to the south.
Originally inhabited by Abenaki and Iroquois tribes, France and Britain fought over claiming the area. Even neighboring New York and New Hampshire tried to included the Vermont territory within their borders on their early maps. Early settlers organized and formed the Green Mountain Boys militia lead by Ethan and Ira Allen, and they fought to gain independence as the Vermont Republic during the Revolutionary war. In 1791, the Vermont Republic became the 14th state to join the Union of the United States of America. For their efforts Ethan and Ira Allen both had islands in Lake Champlain named after them, North and South Hero.
Vermont has a few other quirky features and distinction. Vermont's largest city is Burlington. No other state has a largest city as small as Burlington. Vermont's capital is Montpelier; Montpelier is the only state capital that does not have a McDonald's restaurant within its city limits. Vermont also was the last state to have a Walmart open, home of the great Tunbridge World's Fair, home to Champ the lake monster (in Lake Champlain), one of 2 states that does not have a football team at its state university, and no billboards on the roadside as of 1969.
But for all its quirks and distinctions and being such a small state, Vermont has one great asset...the people. Vermonters are a great bunch that are very approachable and friendly. That coupled with the great scenery and attractions has drawn hundreds of thousands of tourists to Vermont each year.
From the Vermont State Fraternal Order of Eagles, each local Aerie & Auxiliary and our neighbors and friends, Vermont extends a warm welcome to you to come to Vermont and slow down and enjoy life!
